Light the desk, not the screen
Most desk lamps fail by shining into the monitor. You get a bright patch on the glass, you raise the screen brightness to compensate, and by late afternoon your eyes feel sanded. The fix is not a smarter bulb slogan. It is a beam that hits the paper and keyboard and misses the pixels.
Where light should land
Task light belongs on the worksurface: notebook, keyboard, the area just in front of the screen. It should be dimmable. Overhead room light can stay on; the desk lamp is for the patch your hands use. If the only lamp in the room is behind you, the screen becomes a mirror. If it is the only lamp and it points at your face, calls look like an interrogation.
Color temperature is a preference with a range. Around 4000 K is a reasonable daytime starting point: neutral enough to judge printed ink, not so blue that the room feels like a garage. Warmer light (closer to 3000 K) is easier in the evening. A lamp that lets you slide between those without jumping through “modes” will get used. A lamp with six unlabeled icons will stay on whatever it was last Tuesday.
Why a bar on the monitor exists
A monitor light bar clamps to the top of the panel and throws light forward and down. The good ones use an asymmetric optic so the beam prefers the desk, not the glass. You gain two things: the base of a traditional lamp disappears, and the light source sits where your eyes already are, which reduces the pool of shadow between keyboard and screen.
Bars have limits. They need a bezel or a thickness the clip can hold. Very curved panels and some ultra-thin edges need the model that lists a curve radius. Power is usually USB. A port that can supply the stated current matters; a weak pass-through on a hub will flicker. Do not steal the only upstream port your webcam needs. A wall charger or a dedicated port on the monitor is cleaner.
If you still want a classic arm lamp, put it on the side opposite your writing hand so the hand does not cast a shadow, and shade the bulb so you never see the diode. The same glare rule applies: if you can see the light source in the monitor, move it.
Bias light is a separate job
A dim light on the wall behind the screen (bias light) reduces the contrast between a bright panel and a dark room. It is not a substitute for task light. You can do both: a bar for the desk, a soft backlight for the wall. That is what the Halo-style bars add, and why they exist as a third pick rather than a louder version of the first.
