A monitor arm that actually fits the desk
The job of a monitor arm is simple: put the screen at eye height and give the desk back. Most disappointment is not about the finish. It is about a clamp that will not close, a panel heavier than the spring, or a glass top that should never have been clamped.
Measure before you shop
Turn the monitor around. You need three numbers: diagonal size, weight with the stand removed, and the VESA hole pattern. Most office panels use 75×75 mm or 100×100 mm. If there are no holes, an arm will not mount without an adapter, and adapters add depth you may not want.
Then measure the desk. Note thickness at the edge, whether a drawer or steel apron blocks a C-clamp, and whether there is a grommet you are willing to use. If the top is thicker than the listed clamp range, stop. Glass and hollow-core doors are poor clamp surfaces; the jaw can crack a pane or crush a thin skin.
Gas spring, mechanical, or a pole
A gas-spring arm lets you drag the screen with two fingers once tension matches panel weight. Set that tension with the monitor mounted. If the screen drifts down, the spring is too soft or the panel is too heavy. If it pops up, ease the screw in small turns.
A mechanical arm stays where you tighten it. You will use a hex key more often. That is fine for a screen that moves twice a year. A sliding pole is the third pattern: height along a post, less reach, stable on a budget, less graceful if you sit and stand in the same hour.
Height without a gadget
Sit as you actually work. The top of the pixel area should meet your eyes, or sit a finger below. The screen should be about an arm’s length away. If you wear progressive lenses, drop the screen a little and tilt the bottom edge toward you so you are not lifting your chin.
Ultrawides and heavy 32-inch panels need the weight range, not the marketing diagonal. Weigh the panel on a bathroom scale with the stand off if the listing is vague. For two screens, one dual arm on a single clamp often beats two bases on a 48-inch top.
If you use a sit-stand desk, clamp the arm to the moving surface. Recheck tilt after the first week; a tight cable can tug a light panel out of square.
Route power and video through the arm’s clips before you dress the rest of the desk. Leave a service loop at the panel so tilt does not yank a connector. Portrait mode is useful for long documents; confirm the plate rotates freely when the screen is tall.
